Distribution of food packages

10/16/2024

Poor Brazilians have a great need for clothes, but an even greater need for food! .

Before the arrival of COVID-19, there were many volunteers who brought bags of clothes with them. After March we struggled to get clothes sent to Rio de Janeiro, and we had to think again!

Distribution of food to the homeless

The clothes we had not yet distributed were given out in the favelas, but some of the clothes are a bit too expensive to give. If you wear branded clothes in the favelas, you can become a victim of theft because you express that you have money. Another possibility is if expensive clothes fall into the "wrong hands" the clothes can be sold to buy drugs instead.

Branded clothes are still not useless. Many people who live outside the favelas want to buy international brands that are not sold in Brazil. We have thus "sold" a number of branded clothes where the buyer brings food as payment. The food we have received has been distributed to the homeless.

SHARE to CARE together with an institution located in the district of Botafogo had four distributions of food to the homeless. Here, the people have received both lunch and dinner, in addition to food with a long shelf life. In total, around 60 homeless people received food after the four distributions.

Distribution of food parcels in Niteroi

On 30 October, SHARE to CARE had its first of three food distributions with the support we received from the Solofondet!

Together with the organization Semper Criança, SHARE to CARE gave 100 food packages to the institution Gepar. The institution helps families, especially children in favelas in the Niterói area around Piratininga and Charitas. Due to COVID-19, we could not have a joint distribution. The food parcels are at the institution and over the course of several days a total of 300 families came in to get their food parcel for their family.

The pandemic in Brazil has led to more and more people needing help. Gepar ensures that those who need the most help get it first. First-time mothers have first priority, followed by mothers with many children. Rafael told, among other things, about mothers with as many as 7 children!! People who are more vulnerable in the pandemic are also given priority for food.

At the institution there is also a "shop"/bazaar where people donate clothes which the bazaar sells at a cheap price. The income goes to the children who belong to the institution. From the money, they get food, books and other resources. Among other things, the institution helps children from newborns up to the age of 14 with subjects such as Portuguese and maths.

In October we had a food distribution that gave 300 families food for several weeks!
